🚨 BE CYBER STRONG – Paws for Thought Before Buying a Pet Online / BYDDWCH YN SEIBER GADARN – Ystyriwch yn Ofalus Cyn Prynu Anifail Anwes Ar-lein 🐾

We have received reports in North Wales of fraudsters posting ads for non-existent puppies for sale online, leaving victims out of pocket.

Recently, a victim in North Wales responded to a puppy advert on TikTok and was moved onto WhatsApp to discuss the sale. The seller claimed they would deliver the puppy after payment was received. The victim was persuaded to buy Apple gift cards and send the voucher codes to the fraudster as payment. The total loss to the victim was in excess of £1000.

If you're looking to buy a pet online, be alert to the warning signs.

🚩 Red Flags

❌ The price is significantly lower than similar pets or pedigree breeds advertised elsewhere.

❌ The seller refuses or makes excuses to avoid meeting in person or allowing you to see the pet.

❌ Communication is moved off the platform quickly (e.g. from TikTok, Facebook Marketplace or Pets4Homes to WhatsApp, Telegram or text messages).

❌ You're put under pressure to pay a deposit or full payment before seeing the animal. Sometimes it will be claimed that the pet advertised is in high demand, with claims that other buyers are waiting, creating pressure to pay quickly.

❌ Payment is requested through unusual methods such as gift cards, bank transfers, cryptocurrency or cash transfer apps.

❌ The seller asks for additional payments for transport, insurance, crates, vaccinations or other unexpected costs.

❌ Stolen images : Listings often use generic, copied photos of puppies or other pets. A quick reverse-image search on Google can reveal if the exact picture is being used on multiple scam websites.

✅ How to Protect Yourself and be Cyber Strong.

✔ Always see the puppy or pet in person before making any payment.

✔ Visit the breeder or seller at their address and ask to see the animal with its mother where possible.

✔ Use a credit card for payment where possible, as this may provide additional consumer protection.

✔ Check vaccination records, microchip information and breeder registration details.

✔ Be wary of anyone who rushes you into making a decision or payment.

✔ Be cautious of delivery-only arrangements. Whenever possible, collect the pet yourself.

✔ Never pay by gift cards or vouchers. Genuine sellers will not ask for payment using Apple Gift Cards, Google Play cards, Amazon vouchers or similar methods.

✔ If something doesn't feel right, walk away.

Yn ddiweddar, ymatebodd dioddefwr yng Ngogledd Cymru i hysbyseb am gi bach ar werth ar TikTok ac yn sydyn iawn symudodd y drafodaeth drosodd i WhatsApp. Honnodd y gwerthwr y byddai’n galw heibio hefo’r ci bach unwaith y byddai’r taliad wedi’i dderbyn. Perswadiwyd y dioddefwr i brynu cardiau rhodd Apple ac anfon codau’r talebau at y twyllwr fel taliad. Roedd cyfanswm y golled i’r dioddefwr yn fwy na £1,000.

Os ydych yn bwriadu prynu anifail anwes ar-lein, byddwch yn effro i’r arwyddion rhybudd.

❌ Mae’r pris yn sylweddol is na phrisiau anifeiliaid anwes neu fridiau pedigri tebyg sy’n cael eu hysbysebu mewn mannau eraill.

❌ Mae’r gwerthwr yn gwrthod neu’n gwneud esgusodion i osgoi cyfarfod wyneb yn wyneb neu ganiatáu i chi weld yr anifail anwes.

❌ Mae’r sgwrs yn cael ei symud oddi ar y platfform yn gyflym (e.e. o TikTok, Facebook Marketplace neu Pets4Homes i WhatsApp, Telegram neu negeseuon testun).

❌ Rydych yn cael eich rhoi dan bwysau i dalu blaendal neu’r swm llawn cyn gweld yr anifail. Weithiau bydd y gwerthwr yn honni bod galw mawr am yr anifail anwes, gan awgrymu bod prynwyr eraill yn aros, er mwyn eich gorfodi i dalu’n gyflym.

❌ Delweddau wedi’u dwyn: Mae hysbysebion yn aml yn defnyddio lluniau generig neu wedi’u copïo o gŵn bach neu anifeiliaid anwes eraill. Gall chwiliad gwrthdro cyflym am ddelweddau ar Google ddatgelu a yw’r un llun yn cael ei ddefnyddio ar wefannau twyllodrus.

✔ Gwnewch yn siŵr eich bod yn gweld y ci bach neu’r anifail anwes yn bersonol cyn gwneud unrhyw daliad.

✔ Ymwelwch â’r bridiwr neu’r gwerthwr yn eu cyfeiriad a gofynnwch i weld yr anifail gyda’i fam lle bo hynny’n bosibl.

✔ Defnyddiwch gerdyn credyd i wneud taliad lle bo hynny’n bosibl, gan y gall hyn ddarparu amddiffyniad ychwanegol i ddefnyddwyr.

✔ Gwiriwch gofnodion brechu, manylion y microsglodyn a manylion cofrestru’r bridiwr.

✔ Byddwch yn wyliadwrus o unrhyw un sy’n eich rhuthro i wneud penderfyniad neu daliad.
